Volunteers

Hobson’s Conduit Trust Volunteer Group

Max Field, Nick Coni and Richard Wells

Every year, Hobson’s Conduit Trust relies on volunteers to help keep the banks, paths and the brook itself, clear of rubbish so that those who regularly use this route can enjoy the experience of travelling along this ancient waterway.

In the last few months, with the help of new recruits from the Trumpington area, we have cleared the Nine Wells site in Great Shelford, and along the brook from there to the Guided Busway, and we are dealing with the Long Road to Lensfield road section at the present time.

In 2015, we removed some discarded pieces of ironwork, but also various items of clothing including tee-shirts, a pair of socks, a pair of jeans and even an odd shoe! This is in addition to the usual bottles, cups, cans and pieces of fallen timber that find their way into the water. As always, Cambridge Council have organized removal of all the material we have collected, and we are grateful for their support.

The volunteers enjoy the social aspect of the work so after our efforts to improve the environment, it is usual to provide refreshments are provided as a reward. In addition, the Trustees and interested Council personnel, provide briefings about Hobson’s Conduit, its history and development and the local wildlife in this important heritage area.
