The conduit (or brook) runs over-ground from Nine Wells, near the foot of the Gog Magog Hills flowing north towards Cambridge. It passes to the west of Addenbrooke’s Hospital, under Long Road, through woods, and under Brookland’s Avenue. The conduit runs alongside the western end of the Botanic Garden (CB2 1JE and worth a visit), under Bateman Street, and between Trumpington Road and Brookside, terminating over-ground at the Conduit Head. (See Map)At this point it divides in two and continues under-ground.
There is adequate parking to the South of Cambridge at Trumpington Park & Ride. There are many busses from the Park & Ride into central Cambridge all day. Alight at a stop located at the City end of Brookside. Alternatively there is also Pay & Display parking in Trumpington Road (at CB2 1JE) available every day. There is in addition a guided busway which runs from Cambridge railway station to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with a couple of stops beforehand and a brisk walk to the Brook. Therefore, if arriving by train grab the guided bus towards the Hospital and alight as indicated above. An alternative means of access by train is to alight at Gt Shelford railway station(CB22 5LR). There are bicycle stands by the entrance, but no car park.
If you wish to access the conduit via the DNA cycle path, from Gt Shelford station being a brisk walk of about 45 minutes (much less by bike) – proceed south. Turn right at traffic lights onto the A1301, and then right into Granham’s Road. (just before the railway bridge) The DNA path is to your left, marked with a sculpture of the DNA double helix. Take this turning and when reaching Addenbrooke’s Road turn left. After a short distance you will see Hobson’s Conduit, which you can join to the right hand side, ultimately arriving at the Conduit Head, also referred to below.
Should you wish to walk or cycle alongside the Brook, then start at the Conduit Head heading to the south. Pass the end of Bateman Street and continue by the side of the Brook. Please note that access to the side of the Brook from Brookland’s Avenue to the south and ultimately to Nine Wells is intended for pedestrian access only, bicycle access being severely limited. There is no designated parking for bicycles in close proximity of the Brook.
Crossing Brookland’s Avenue with care, follow the west side of the Brook , though delightful woods, passing over the Brook and continuing along the east side. Cross over Long Road and continue alongside the course of the Brook. You will see the famous Addenbrooke’s Hospital in the distance to your left. A new parkland with small lakes serving an adjoining development is being created for public recreation and limited parking will be available here.
Cross over the road to the hospital and stay alongside the Brook which will take you to the springs at Nine Wells. The only real opportunities to park a car are as outlined above.
Make sure to exercise great caution when crossing any of the busy roads referred to above.
